From Viña del Mar we traveled a few miles south by commuter train to visit the famous and historical port city of Valparaiso. The photo above shows a view of the harbor and the city built on hills. It was once the south Pacific's most important port before the opening of the Panama Canal. It is now the most beguiling city in the country. It is also the seat of the Chilean lower house of Parliament. Because the city is built on coastal hills there are many ascensors like the one shown in the photo below to help you navigate the city.
