From Myconos we took a day trip by boat to the ancient Island of Delos. It is one of the most important archaeological sites in Greece. The god Apollo was born here. The myth relates that Leto, pursued by Hera, found refuge on a floating rock island, which Poseidon then anchored to the sea bottom with pillars of granite. Here, under a palm, she bore to Zeus the twins Apollo and Artemis, attended by Arge and Opis, the two maidens from the hyperborean regions of the north, which the god was required to visit annually in winter. (So much for the Greek mythology lesson!)
