The city of Cuzco is located in the Andes mountains at an elevation of 11,000 feet above sea level. It is the archaeological capital of the Americas and the continent's oldest continuously inhabited city. When Columbus arrived, Cuzco was the thriving, powerful capital of the Inca Empire. The discovery of Machu Picchu in 1911 affected Cuzco more than any event since the arrival of the Spanish. Cuzco is now an international tourism center.
