Tower of Belém

In the summer of 2000 we returned to Portugal. This time we visited Lisbon and the surrounding area. In the photo above is the Tower of Belém, perhaps Portugal's most photographed monument. It has come to symbolize Lisbon and the Age of Discoveries. Manuel I intended it as a fortress to guard the entrance to Lisbon's harbor. A short distance away along the river Tejo is the Padrão dos Descobrimentos Monument shown in the photo below. It was inaugurated in 1960 on the 500th anniversary of the death of Prince Henry the Navigator.
